 Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth that can be removed and put back into your mouth as you please. Depending on your case, you may need full dentures (UCD or LCD) or partial dentures (URPD or LRPD). Full dentures are used when all of your natural teeth are missing, and partial dentures are used when only some of the teeth are missing from the top or bottom parts of your mouth.

There are two methods of denture preparation:

• Conventional Dentures – This is when all your teeth are removed and your gums are allowed enough time to heal fully before your dentures are started. Generally, this process takes between 2-3 months, depending on how long it takes for you to heal properly. The benefit to this method is it allows for a better final fit when the dentures are made, and only minimal adjustments are necessary to ensure comfort. Although  this method means you will be without teeth during the healing time, you may choose to use a temporary denture (flipper) to maintain appearance and function.
• Immediate  Dentures –  In this method, the dentures are completed before  your teeth are removed. Afterwards, you can use your new dentures immediately and do not have to spend any time without teeth. However, this method requires several follow-up visits over 2-4 months to re-fit the dentures as your gums and bone heal and change shape.

Because dentures are removable and are unlike your natural teeth, they do take some getting used to. Please allow a few weeks to a few months for you to adjust to your dentures, but while dentures are a good alternative to no teeth, they are not designed to feel perfectly comfortable.
