Sealants are used to protect your back teeth (molars) against tooth decay and cavities. Molars usually appear when your child is 5-7 years old, and a second set appear between the ages of 11-14. It’s best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to make sure the teeth are protected early, so parents should make an appointment to get the treatment done as soon as possible.

A sealant is a clear resin that is painted onto a tooth’s chewing surface in a quick, painless visit. The resin hardens and creates a barrier between the tooth and any food particles, bacteria and plaque. Sealants usually last for about 10 years and can be reapplied if necessary.
